Bizarre one this. Bought a standing ticket to be as near to the Order as possible but got into the stadium around 4pm (first band 5pm) to find out they'd already filled out their quota of fans stage-front so - after my initial disgust - settled down in the sun to sink beers and watch the bands from a bar at the far end of the pitch, what seemed like a million miles away.
Got talking to a German neworder bod though (dressed in Temptation 98 t-shirt) who was convinced we could genuinely get down the front after Ash's set. JJ72 and Ash came and went so me and 2 of my party made for the left hand side of the stage in order to gain access to the inner sanctum. 2 burly security guards were having none of it and refused a 100Dm bribe so we took another 20mins to wade through the assembled bodies (it seems German concert goers set themselves down in one spot for the entire duration and don't even need to move due the wandering Becks salesman replenishing their every liquid need) and finally made it to the right of the stage to be faced by a fresh-faced security guard on his own. And he wouldn't even accept a 300Dm (100 pounds in real money!) bribe to let us through! Of all the cheek. But just at that point the infamous Alex gave me a tap on the shoulder, and so there we were - me + 2 and Alex + 6, 10 English Neworder fans in all - marooned behind a barrier, more than yards back from the stage - when the band finally appeared.
Atmosphere started with Primal Scream drowning out the band, still playing on huge video screens either side of the stage. And it was all downhill from there. Absolutely NO-ONE else was up for this one. No atmosphere whatsoever. Cue Barney: "Are you all having a good time [pause] Cos it doesn't fucking look like you are." A huge Mexican wave started during 60mph and got a bigger cheer than the band had all evening. Blue Monday finally got the German heads nodding but all in all this gig seemed a totally pointless exercise. If ever a gig deserved World In Motion finale, it was this one. That might've ruffled a few feathers. Robbie, on the other hand, rocked the venue - he is the ultimate showman. Anyone who can get 60,000 Germans singing along to English-language songs and have 30% of them bedecked in Union Jacks is a winner in my book. A sound bloke. Quote of the night "I used to be in the Spice Girls [pause] Well, two of them". Boom boom. Not a bad day out, all in all, just a bit 'different' as New Order gigs go.
Set - same as America, minus TMW and True Faith.

just returned home from the cologne gig - my first ever new order gig... (waited 11 years... hm, blabla...) anyway, it was more than an experience, already suggesting before that it will be a tough show due to the audience (best question I got asked by a teen girl - do you know who new order are? we think they are a boyband...) - incompetent organization (the already mentioned thing about getting into the first rows... you have x robbie fans sitting there the whole time and no chance due to wristbands been given out to them to get in there...), so we had to enjoy the band from the second circle + I have never ever seen a more igonrant audience before...
setlist has already been mentioned - lovely choice to let your silent face stay in the set (my bet was this would be out...) + leaving most of the people there totally bewildered. barney started to take the piss out of the audience + add more lovely comments as the gig continued. (do you like dance music? nah, you probably like marching music), temptation is a song about all the lovely things in life that we never do like poking in the nose... hm, and blue monday is about the soft-sex movies on german pay-tv in hotel rooms... hehehe, by the way, phil got a plastic bottle thrown at him - and at the end of blue monday hooky threw his bass into his amps...
so, you can say, quite a special night, enjoyed it a lot personally - a shame about the audience!!! very intense performance nevetheless!

Bernard Sumner glares balefully at 60,000 apathetic German Robbie Williams fans in Cologne's Müngersdorfer stadium. "Do you like dance music?" he asks. No response. Even from way back in the crowd I can see him bristle at the lack of reaction. It's clear he's dying to let rip. He can't keep it in any longer and growls menacingly, "Do you like marching music?" and New Order rip into Touched by the Hand of God, one of their huge fund of classics. Backstage after the gig Sumner grins when I remind him of his comment. “That was the least offensive thing that sprang to mind. I had to keep biting my lip. Robbie Williams fans aren't really our audience." Peter Hook, the band's bearded bassist and master of melody, quite enjoyed the show. "As Bernard often tells me, 'You'd enjoy playing in Beirut.' But I like a challenge. After the show Robbie Williams hugged me and said 'Well done, you did well to get through that.' Mind you, Bernard was so annoyed I thought he was going to start World War III." New Order are playing at the request of Robbie Williams, but most of the crowd were probably still at primary school when the band released their last album, 1993's Republic. It's no surprise that the sight of these forty-somethings playing music that still sounds futuristic doesn't stir their hormones.
But for the few New Order aficionados in the crowd the sight of the band dubbed 'the post-punk Beatles' playing again after such a long hiatus is a near-religious experience. They are the most influential band of the past 25 years, without New Order there would be no U2, Primal Scream or Pet Shop Boys.

[he giggles a bit delivering this line]" He ahhs and makes a couple other Barney-esque noises, including a grunt, whoop, and whistle
This version is a bit shambolic.
BS: "Thank you very much, very polite audience tonight."
PH: "Yes, you can." [dunno who he was responding to] Plucks bass a bit.
Temptation
(punter can be heard crying for "Blue Monday" right before Barney starts speaking)
BS: "Okay, this is a song...you probably have never heard of, actually looking at you, but in England [Hooky laughs] it's a very famous song [Hooky gasp-sighs]. It's called Temptation. [Phil chuckles]... It's about doing bad things, which obviously you never do, like picking your nose, and forgetting to cut your toenails."
They play Temptation.
BS: "Thank you. Thank you very much. Very kind of you..."
60 Miles An Hour
Electric guitar chord.
BS: "Ok, this is a...a new song off our new album, which is called Get Ready. It's called 60 Miles An Hour, which is the speed limit in England actually. So if you ever go to England, be careful how far... how fast you drive, because it's a lot faster than your speed limit, which I believe I believe is, eh, only a hundred kilometers an hour. Very interesting point there."
Hooky blows the intro.

BS: "Okay, you might have heard this hoary old chestnut we're about to play, it's called...it called Blue Monday. It's about the porno channels in German hotels. Which are absolutely disgusting."
All the audience claps along to this one.
