NO: 02 AUG 2001 - Thunderbird Stadium, Vancouver BC

thehappyone - a new blend of both circulating audience recordings

Setlist

Atmosphere, Regret, Crystal, Your Silent Face, Turn My Way, Bizarre Love Triangle, Touched By The Hand Of God, Temptation, Love Will Tear Us Apart, 60 Miles An Hour, Blue Monday

Second of four Area One West Coast dates, with Smashing Pumpkins mainstay Billy Corgan on guitar.  Seems to have been performed in daylight, which is of course, a bit suboptimal.

Setlist, with this writeup being new to the 25th anniversary of this show, as for some reason I never got around to doing one, although the banter here is just as interesting as anything else from this era.

Atmosphere

PH:  "Who fucking booed?  We'll kick your fucking head in!"

BS:  "Hello, we're New Order.  Please welcome to the stage..."

PC:  (interjecting)  "Hullo."

BS:  "Our new guitarist, Phil Cunningham, of England.  And the most obnoxious man in rock, Stephen Morris.  Oh yeah, Billy Corgan as well.  And Peter Hook."

PH:  "Hey".

BS:  "And it is our roadies!"

Hooky leads in with a 1-2-3-4 intro, off mic, which the tapers were close enough to pick up.

BS:  "ank you."

PH:  "Hey Billy, your sister's here.  She's got the chorus she gave you for Christmas."

BS:  "Thanks a lot."

Regret

BS:  "Okay this is...a song called Regret."

Hooky gets a bit lost in the bass solo at the 2:50 point.

BS:  "Thank you!"

Crystal

BS:  "No, we're not playing Ceremony tonight"  (audience members express their disappointment with awww's)  Because Ceremony fucking sucks.  We're going to play our new single, however, because we all want you to buy that one, we don't want you to buy Ceremony, we want you to buy our new single, Crystal, and it sounds just like this..."

(at end)

BS:  "Thank you!"

Your Silent Face

BS:  "Jerry, if you could back it down a touch, please."

PH:  "On the record, we're not allowed to..."  Bernard interrupts him, rendering the remainder of his statement as unintelligible, they have a schedule to keep, you see.

BS:  "This is called Your Silent Face."

Turn My Way

BS:  "Okay, we're going to subject you to a new song now.  It's called "Turn My Way", and it's all Billy Corgan's fault."

BS:  "'ank you!"

Bizarre Love Triangle

BS:  "This is Bizarre Love Triangle."  (to audience member) I heard you!  We're going to play it just for you. The guy with the blue T-shirt and the yellow bit here, what's your name?  I feel like I've known you all my life.  Here we go."

BS: (at end)  "'ank you!"

Touched By The Hand Of God

BS:  "Okay, ok, ok...guess what we're going to play next?"

People amusingly yell out "Blue Monday!"

BS:  "Probably not."

PH:  (presumably to a heckler telling them to get off the stage)  "I told you to watch your mouth."

BS:  "Well, listen, they'll be coming on soon.  I mean..." [can't make out the rest of his sentence]

BS: (at end)  "'ank you!"

Temptation

PH:  "So slippery up there you can't do anything.  You Americans and your weather..."

Of course, for that, he receives a chorus of boos, as well...they're not in America, you see.

PH:  "I hope you can forgive me for that.  Just like I forgive you."

BS:  "Ignore what he's saying, just listen to me.  I am the voice of truth.  This song is Temptation."

Love Will Tear Us Apart

BS:  "This is a song we've never played before in Canada.  Called Love Will Tear Us Apart...I think...just (?) like that anyway....get on with it!.

Hooky yells out "Let's go, Vancouver!" after the chorus.

BS: (at end)  "'ank you!  I know people tell me."

60 Miles An Hour

BS:  "Now we're going to play something that'll make you want to kill yourself.  Set on doing it.  My speciality.  It's called 60 Miles An Hour."

BS: (at end)  "'ank you!

BS:  "Whoa.  It stopped raining as well.  No, it just...it just started again.  Sorry.  Anyway, we like the rain in England.  I'm sure that you like it too.  You have no fucking choice, anyway...do you really"

Blue Monday

BS:  "Okay, this is our last song it's called Brrue Monday.  My favorite"

Billy's guitar sounds a bit like a theramin in parts.

(at end)

PH:  "Good evening, Vancouver!"

Various guitar feedback to PA music coming back, with taper commentary from GB, as the SR version cuts out by this point, with him noting they didn't play True Faith, but they did play the other songs, including LWTUA.  And everyone knew Regret.

SPCODEX has a photo montage and a ticket stub, which can't be displayed directly, as that site prohibits embedding.  The YouTube upload displays a few of these, though.

Versions

AUD #1 - GB, Sonic Studios DSM-6L, Sony PCM-M1 DAT

AUD #2 - SR, Sonic Studios DSM-6, Sony D8 DAT

The YouTube upload above is a blend of both these recordings, since I couldn't choose between them, as they were done with very similar equipment close to one another.

ASW also recorded and videoed this show, but neither audio nor video appear to circulate.
