Elegia, Shellshock, Paradise, Bizarre Love Triangle, Way Of Life, State Of The Nation, Face Up,The sound quality on my source is very good, but there are a couple of technical problems with the media marring my initial glowing appraisal. Still, not bad for a festival marking the 10th anniversary of punk.
Snotters has subsequently shared the version he received from Lazlo, taped from Picadilly Radio.
Weird guitar noises and tape hiss great the entering listener. This may have been from a soundcheck or may be completely unrelated. The FM version has none of this, of course.
Some muttering at the beginning that I have no hope of ever making out.
PH: "Does anyone speak English? Is anyone from England?"
Some folks actually say "yeah".
PH: "That's OK, I got the Schnapps."
Onward...
AN: "Thank you Collusion(?). Good evening, who do you think is the best popular music group in the world? I think it's New Order!"
(audience approves and starts calling out
The announcer-type entity says it again...)
AN: "Who do you think is the best popular music group in the world?" (gee, who?)
AN: "I think it's New Order!"
Somebody calls out "C'mon, you bastard!"
Then chants of "Here we go...", to the melody of some tune everybody knows but I can't recall the name of offhand.
AN: "Who do you think is the best popular music group in the world? New Order!"
Barney and co. then take the stage.
BS: "Hello, Rome(?), we're New Order". Then we hear a sound that's a cross between a kiss and a guitar being plugged in.
BS: "Guitar between the foldback, yah. Yo!"
Elegia
The announcer talks over the track at about the 0:25 point, bah.
Announcer: "The Festival Of The Tenth Summer, from GMEX. Peter Hook, Gillian Gilbert, Stephen Morris, Bernard Sumner, New Order!"
BS: "Thanks very much."

BS: "Now we're gonna liven up a bit now, for a song that's got singing in it. (a few seconds later) Bass sequencer."
Shellshock
There's some synthesis going on here that sounds different than what I hear in the released versions. I especially like the statacco keyboard line.
The lyrics are also a bit different, too:
"I've been good and and I've been bad but/ A fucking twat I've never had/
You know where you used to be/
Your happiness(?) felt so close to me"
"That's the way that I can't win/
A victim of the state I'm in..."
(instead of a victim of your evil sin)
On the FM version, the vocals get distant and fuzzy at about the 0:50 mark.
(punter: Ceremony!)
Announcer comments "New Order, GMEX. Play some new songs, after the break".
Paradise
BS: "Eh, this next song's a new song off our new LP, called Paradise. The song is called Paradise, the LP isn't."
A fairly intense version, of the song ensues. Sumner's vocals are deliciously overstrained.
Bizarre Love Triangle
PH: "This one's for the, eh, next generation of the Blackburn Lads. We all know what the Blackburn Lads get up to, don't we?"
The lyrics vary a bit from standard, but more along the lines of phrasing, not content. The volume starts shifting around about 3/4's of the way in, like the taper's getting sloshed around.
BS: "Thank you very much. Thank you very very very much, very very much."
Way Of Life
The debut performance.
BS: "This is a new song now, another new song. Some of us are playing new songs tonight, and some of us aren't..."
(connotations?)
Near the end there's a pop...probably present in the MP3 dub, not in the original.
Announcer: "Recorded live at GMEX by Picadilly Radio, New Order, back soon."
State Of The Nation
BS: "Thank you thank you, we're getting into it now, getting into it."
Punters call out for "We All Stand" and "Leave Me Alone"...
This doesn't appear *at all* on the FM version, it seems.
Different lyric for the second verse:
"From my home / I have been / Many dead people I have seen / Know it all / would make you smile / if only I could talk for a while / Now we turn our backs to the sea / Where all drowned sailors will never be / I know it all could be so small / We turn our backs and kill the world"
Face Up
BS: "You shall get, shall get, you shall get spoke to me, you twat, that I can see you. I have all these people down here you're bumping into that are getting annoyed."
A bit hard to make out, I probably don't have the wording right. Naturally, this is faded/edited out of the FM airing.
The sound suddenly cuts out...and Face Up is cued back again at start. Weird. This tape might be an amalgamation of different sources.
Barney giggles at one point in this, after singing "Don't let anybody tell you that you're a cunt, because it's not OK".
BS: "Thank you very much, we love you all, each and every one of ya. Personally. You know me, ah, right right right right, yeah."
The Perfect Kiss
BS: (at 0:15) "Vodka, vodka, it's vodka. It's vodka."
(seems to be missing from the audience version or I didn't note it)
Barney is laughing through quite a few vocal lines.
The audience version has a cut about halfway through...it picks up a little before where it left off...but the sound is muffled. There's another cut out later. This doesn't affect the FM version.
Announcer: "New Order at GMEX as part of the Festival Of The Tenth Summer, will be back after a moment."
Ceremony
BS: "Thank you very much. Eh, we got a singer coming on to sing the last song. He doesn't swear as much as me."
Ian McCulloch, of course.
FM cuts the introduction out entirely.
The muffling clears up by the time the vocals come in.
A portion of the performance was televised on "Make Of Europe" which appeared on UK TV in 1988. McCulloch is singing with a cigarette in his right hand. Hooky joins him at the same mic at one point during the chorus. Mac adds his trademark vocals to the mix.
IM: "Thank you very much, fucker!"
I guess they exchange thanks, or something. Yeah. :)
Temptation
BS: "This is a bit of an obvious song for an encore, but it's a very nice song, I hope you all like it. It's a very nice song actually, very very very nice. It's like those old good goodbyes, you know."
PH: "See you in 10 years."
In between the 'I've never seen like anyone like you before' stanzas, Bernard says "turn it off!", probably addressed at an errant stage light. At around 5:39, Bernard punches at the mic stand, knocking it down.
The "Viking Theme" music streams in after they finish up.
