NO: 21 JUN 1986 Loughborough University - Loughborough
Setlist
State Of The Nation, Everything's Gone Green, The Perfect Kiss, Sunrise,Sooner Than You Think, This Time Of Night, Blue Monday, Face Up, Temptation,
Age Of Consent, Bizarre Love Triangle
BS (at end): "Thanks very much"
Everything's Gone Green is the short version they would play in this era, with a Hooky coda in the end, followed by a feedback squall.
BS: "That's the person in front of you who's spitting, it has to stop. Cuz we know what it is, and is already stalking(?) out there, I don't want them to fine you."
As a punter yells out "Fuck off, Hooky." as someone intones "get off the stage", presumably directed towards someone from the crowd who had transgressed versus the band.
AUD #2 - ANA1. Supplied by David Power, has BM in full, and is a better recording, which I've upped to YouTube, as it's also been shared publicly.
AUD #3 - ANAx. From perspexorange: ""Distinct female chatter right at the very start of TPK. BM still cut (like the SD? version), but at a different point (7m mark?)". Worse than the others.
Walking Under Ladders opened.
For some reason, this performance never generated a writeup back in the day, so this is being penned from scratch in June 2026, hence tracks are indicated in bold italics and not the underlining which no less than one Declan H. condemned, and rightfully, too. At some point, I'll go through and fix all the other shows to standard.
As 'Funeral For A Viking' plays, there's an announcement on stage that sounds like "Five more minutes, Hooky", maybe delivered sardonically, as State Of The Nation immediately commences. About 20 seconds in, some dame makes the pronouncement that "This is Loughborough University", as it's not everyday that one gets New Order showing up to play in your town. The percussion in the end here is slightly balearic, a harbinger of things to come.
BS (at end): "Thanks very much"
Everything's Gone Green is the short version they would play in this era, with a Hooky coda in the end, followed by a feedback squall.
The Perfect Kiss has Hooky shouting off mic, "Go". This version is relatively unabridged, with folks audibly singing along to this anthem, and one punter yells out "Hooky, brill!" after it concludes.
BS (at end): "Thanks very much."
Sunrise follows, fairly unusual for it to appear so early in a gig.
BS (at end): "Thanks very much." Maybe this is why I didn't write this up, if that's all he says here.
Sooner Than You Think
Lyrical variation: "Hello everyone, it's good (vs "nice") to be here."
BS (at end): "Thanks very much." Then the sound of a guitar being unplugged. And something else!
BS: "That's the person in front of you who's spitting, it has to stop. Cuz we know what it is, and is already stalking(?) out there, I don't want them to fine you."
This Time Of Night follows.
Lyrical variation: "All pleasure and fuck all (vs "nothing") to gain!"
Second verse has Bernard coming in late, which causes him to have to ad-lib a bit. No Hooky on backing vocals on this version.
Blue Monday
BS: "Uh, we're gonna play one now that brutally can't [cover] our losses." Hooky playing during this makes it a bit hard to make out, or Mr. Sumner's sipped a bit too much Pernod, and none of the other recordings are any clearer whether in fact he says "cover", as it sounds more like "worry".
(at end) BS: "Thank you much, bear with us here.
BS: "Thank you, stop the spit as well, I appreciate it. Even though who's spitting has very nice spearmint, best spit I've ever had."
Classic.
Face Up
Between verses he tells someone to "fuck off".
This segues into Temptation.
BS (at end): "Thanks very much".
Age Of Consent follows.
BS: "Thank you".
As a punter yells out "Fuck off, Hooky." as someone intones "get off the stage", presumably directed towards someone from the crowd who had transgressed versus the band.
Bizarre Love Triangle closes out the set. This still has the "you got thoughts inside your head / you think too much, you are dead" refrain which wouldn't make the cut.
(at end) BS: "Thanks a lot, good night!"
Bonus:
Peter Hook interview at the gig recorded by a couple of students.
Versions
AUD #1 - ANA1. May have been recorded by SD, may he rest in peace. Has more of the Vikings intro, but has Blue Monday cut.
AUD #2 - ANA1. Supplied by David Power, has BM in full, and is a better recording, which I've upped to YouTube, as it's also been shared publicly.
There's also a mono recording from IAP that I don't have which is also the source for an interview done with Hooky.
