Sounds 12 APR 86

Live review by Jack Barron can be found here.  The cynical and spiteful comments NO was so fond of make did not go unnoticed by Mr. Barron.

Had two versions of this, a somewhat hissy, but good-sounding audience tape, and the ATR/Stash soundboard. I've since gotten a better version of the audience tape. Another audience tape surfaced on DIME in September 2006, this one preserving a bit of Alan Wise's intro.

AW: "An all-feminist camera crew...all-feminist camera crew, and colonel Khadafy's favorite band, number one in Libya, New Order!"

A bunch of "Manchester la-la-la's"...

Bernard's very talkative in this one. He sounds dead pissed. Another good quality recording, but I can't claim to make out all the patter, but it's obvious that the crowd was adoring our Mancunian heroes (not).

The Perfect Kiss

BS: "Hello, everyone, we're New Order. And this is The Perfect Kiss."

BS: "Thank you very much."

At the end, Bernard strums his guitar and remarks, "It sounds out of tune."

Everything's Gone Green

You can hear Hooky state "ready, go!" very low in the mix.

Energetic whoop by Mr. Sumner, and then a song intro.

BS: "This is Everything's Gone Green."

He comes in late, missing the first line.

Impressive echo on the "show me" line.

Broken Promise

PH: "Thank you very much indeed."

BS: "I believe this next song is on our next LP, even though we've not recorded it yet, and it's called Broken Promise."

lyric: "The things that mean so much to me, don't mean FUCK ALL to you..." and "If I'm right and you're FUCKING STUPID..."

Lonesome Tonight

BS: "Thank you very much, you're now all getting into it a little bit now...said you're bunch of...you lot...said [unintelligible]...some acoustic..."

Not one of their best renditions, alas.

Different lyric:

"You believe in truth and the purity of youth You believe in live and struggle to get..."

Bizarre Love Triangle

BS: "'Shut your fucking gobs', as Bernard Manning would say, at two here on 'em" (not 100% sure what he says here).

Philip Collins (RIP) explains: "Bernard Manning is a fat Mancunian 'comedian' from the old school - i.e. he tells crude, racist, sexist jokes that are usually awful although there's the occasional one that you find yourself laughing to (even though you know you shouldn't!)."

PH: "Yo."

BS: "Okay, I'm ready."

Still has the early-version chorus with "you can take me by the hand..."

lyric: "Wisdom of a cunt will set you free"

(edit in audience tape)

This Time Of Night

BS: "Can't understand why we haven't played here in Cambridge in six years."

(turns out that the John Barron quote in the article above merges two different Barney comments, and as a result isn't technically precise)

(adopts fake Oxbridge accent)

BS: "Cuz Y'all so wonderful eh y'all."

Very interestingly, the "fucking boring" bit does NOT appear on the ATR/Stash mixer, but is on the other tape. Could be because the tape was flipped at this point.

Shellshock

BS: "This is a very, very, very, very, very new song, and it is called Shellshock, and it's our new single. A lot of people said we can't play it, but some of us know better, don't we?"

(song has a synth line that doesn't appear in the release)

Dropout on left channel between 1:01 and 2:14.

Ceremony

BS: "Well, what a tame audience you are. What a bunch of boring cunts you are. Boring, the lot of you. You make me want to...piss myself... (coughs)."

PH: "Don't give a fuck, Ozzie, then."

BS: "We're New Order and we don't care."

PH: "Fuck you."

BS: "Who starts the song?"

PH: (to the audience and at the same time Barney speaking) "That's on cue(?)..."

Sunrise

BS: (to stage crew) "...do not. Have you got a cord...cord, please?"

(to taunter) "Shut up, you bastard...(bass riff starts)... "that was a compliment."

Loud feedback at start.

Face Up

BS: "Andy...(unintelligible though loud bass amp feedback)...for this flute(?). Few lights when I'm playing, I can't see what I'm playing. That accounts for the mistakes tonight, everyone."

PH: "Fancy to be in another one after that, eh. Fucking hell. You lucky bastards."

A quick bass scale form the Hookster.

(off mic) "Right?"

Bernard is badly flubbing lyrics throughout the song...

PH: "The [?] comes deaf as we're always deaf."

ATR soundboard tape cuts off at "as".
