NO: 04 MAY 1985 Koseinenkin Kaikan Hall - Osaka, Japan

Setlist

The Perfect Kiss, Confusion, Age Of Consent, Subculture, In A Lonely Place, Lonesome Tonight, Sooner Than You Think, Hurt, Sunrise, Blue Monday, As It Is When It Was, Temptation

Writeup done against AUD #1, a good-sounding audience recording, no more than a generation or two from the master.

The Perfect Kiss

Synth speed varies a bit through the first few seconds.

BS: (at 1:23) "One, two"

Uncharacteristically for a Japanese show, you can hear a bit of chatter two something minutes in.

Confusion

You can hear a chair squeaking, it's so quiet.

BS: "Excuse me, this next one's called Confusion. And we'd like to dedicate it to [somebody or something I can't make out, due to the reverb and a bunch of cheering].

At 2:42, Barney orders the crew to "turn it down a little bit."  I swear at the end somebody yells out "Boo yah!" (at 5:08).

Age Of Consent

A good demonstration of why Hooky's bass sound is utterly dependent on the chorus pedal he forgot to bring or broke down.

Subculture

BS: "Thanks a lot."

In A Lonely Place

How odd, at 1:55 or so there's a sound of somebody reloading a magazine, heard a bit again at 2:16.  Perhaps from a film camera.

At end:

BS: "Is it possible that you've got another ... [can't decipher due to the reverb]

Lonesome Tonight

There's a bit of improvisation...or Bernie just plum forgot the lyrics!

Sooner Than You Think

The recorder gets tapped or something at 3:40ish.

Edit between this and the next number,  Hurt, which starts out a much lower volume and is faded up...

Song kind of stumbles over itself as it closes.

Sunrise

BS: (coughing) "Excuse me. Thank you very much."

Blue Monday finishes out the main set.

As It Is When It Was

BS: "I...have only sung this...once before."

There's about three minutes of clapping and cheering for an encore, but one doesn't come, as the venue PA starts playing Talking Heads' Burning Down The House.

But...New Order do come back...

BS: "Thank you very much for...[can't make out]...the encore"

Temptation finishes out the show.

Versions

AUD #1 Sony TC-D5 (likely Sony ECM-990F mics because of the very high SQ and those were typically provided with this unit) - Lineage (HF < M.F.) A note about the venue name. Notice it is substantially identical to Tokyo.  Quality is good, but not as good as other D5s, perhaps due to mics/venue acoustics/taper location/venue acoustics.  A/B flip between STYT and Hurt, with the latter being faded in.

AUD #2 "Kinney". Wardour release. See https://www.giginjapan.com/new-order-85osaka/  A much better recording. 'Hurt' doesn't have fade-in.  Fractured/Image uses this recording for their YouTube link.
