NO: 19 APR 1985 Leisure Centre, Macclesfield

Setlist

As It Is When It Was, Love Vigilantes, Blue Monday, Sooner Than You Think, This Time Of Night, Elegia, Denial, Sunrise, Face Up, The Perfect Kiss

Alan Wise intro, preserved only on Lazlo recording.

AW: "Welcome to Macclesfield Leisure Centre. They all thought before tonight's turn up on stage in two minutes, do that again(?) all the group, for the audience, just for Lance Mumford happy 21st birthday from Jumping Jack Flash, the second announcement from the (concerned?) tonight, Stephen and Gillian would like to say "hello" to everyone in their hometown, the best place on Earth to live.

(cheers)

AW: "Welcome to New Order!"

PH: "Okay, sheep-shaggers, let's go!"

The davemings copy starts off at "shaggers". My M3 starts off at "let's go".

Hooky's bass sound for As It Is When It Was is fabulously overloaded, as it is here and throughout.

BS: "Thank you. That song's so new, it won't even be on our next LP, which is so old, that song won't be on it."

Love Vigilantes

Bernard throws in an original couplet:

"Oh, I threw it to the ground
Like this [?] guy we found
In a great big pool of blood
I couldn't take it no more"

Blue Monday follows, in glorious cowbell technicolor.

BS: "Thanks very much." [?]

Punter cries for Everything's Gone Green, which he's not going to get this time. The Order instead perform Sooner Than You Think.

This Time Of Night comes on its heels.

Another brilliant stanza:

"The marks, they'll never show / Elvis Presley will never go"

Hooky's bass goes a bit awry near the end.

Shouts out for "Age Of Consent" and "Confusion".

Elegia

Hooky's bass is just massive here.

Ends with a bell.

BS: "That goes to show you should always carry a spare."

Craig Wood notes, "Remember, this was after Elegia where he completely destroyed his guitar. It was almost, but not quite, Townshend-esque auto-destruction. But wrecked it was."

I find it hilarious that Bernard would pick the solemn dirge to trash his axe on. Which I think must have been the point.

Denial

Bernard sings "inside my balls" and "To beat back this Emulator will cause me no pain."...

Hooky's backing vocals are quite distinct near the 3:45 mark.

Sunrise

BS: "Who said we were a synthesizer group, eh? I won't fuck off. You bastard. I can see the public's behind us."

And this one-liner: "Please don't adjust your set because you've got the wrong TV."

Face Up

Hooky yells out, "C'mon you fucking cunts!" (or something to that effect)

Thank you very much, I do appreciate it, I do appreciate it."

The Perfect Kiss

BS: "This is our tribute to the Three Degrees. It's called, 'A Thermometer in the bottom".

lyric: "I often thought he was strange / I often thought he was a bad bastard."

Pyrtwist (also AUD #2)

The Cassette Converter (yet another copy of AUD #2, but worse-sounding)

Versions

AUD #1 CW Sony TCS-300 Aiwa CM-30 mic.  Different from the common version, which apparently doesn't capture all of Hooky's "Okay, sheep-shaggers, let's go!" intro.

CW: "And Hooky's opening remark was "OK sheep-shaggers! Let's go!" - my tape is remarkably clear on this... as is the guy on the left of me saying "His hair's pretty long, i'nt it?" before the the first bass notes. I have no idea who the mystery commentator was."

End of Sunrise cut.

AUD #2 MG Sony TCS-350 Sony ECM-929LT. Common version.  Missing the OK in the "Ok, sheep-shaggers, let's go" intro, and doesn't have the comment about Hooky's hair in CW's. This is the davemings version shared on DIME back in 2005.

AUD #3 Lazlo Saisho P50 / Philips (borrowed).  "This is a Lazlo pissed-up production" at start, after Alan Wise's intro. Elegia has a cut and tape garbling about 1:15 in. TPK is cut about a minute short.

AUD #4  This appears to be a distinct version, sounding pretty similar to CWs, but perhaps taped a bit further back. A bit of whining noise.

A soundboard recording of this show was listed per the MDMA site, though I can't find the link to it now.  IKON also apparently filmed this show though this is not known to have ever been shown.
