NO: 22 AUG 1985 Civic Auditorium - Santa Monica, California
Setlist
The Perfect Kiss, Temptation, Dreams Never End, Thieves Like Us, Leave Me Alone, Love Vigilantes, Subculture, State Of The Nation, Everything's Gone Green, Face Up, Confusion [encore] Blue Monday, SunriseFairly good sounding tape from the archives. There were more than seven songs played, the extant recording that circulates is incomplete, as Waterrat, et al don't list more than seven songs here.
Pre-gig intro sounds like Run-DMC.
The Perfect Kiss
BS: "This is called 'A Perfect Kiss'".
Apparently the wrong part was triggered, and the song comes to a stop after about 25 seconds, with Barney saying, "Sorry."Song restarts with the proper bit first.
Quite a bit of 'bird noise' (annoying audience chatter) during this. Really, it's just a single annoying b*tch.
BS: "Thank you very much."
One can hear some guy call out, "Relax",
b*tch: "I don't need your bullshit", and "They actually were once Joy Division... give us a break! (as Temptation starts up).
This is not Depeche Mode, people.
Song suffers from a few feedback squalls, and lots of Barney's cooing. :)
More commentary: "They were even better last time."
Dreams Never End
PH: "Okay, kids."
More annoying commentary from the b*tch.
Thieves Like Us
BS: (after about one minute of intro) "Hello, everyone!"
Another entry in why one should not tape around catty bitches.
b*tch: "These fat girls over here....they're like...slapping their butts..."
Leave Me Alone
Guitar intro starts off way off-tune...
"You get these words wrong..." portion sung in a more drawn-out fashion, as was common during this tour.
More commentary...
PH: "This is a pause while we change basses on the QX...[last bit drowned out by the intro to Love Vigilantes]
Alternate lyrics: "Then I saw the telegram, that said I was a miserable bastard and that I should be shot."
Good one!
Sub-culture
Some time spent tuning...
BS: "Okay, we know this number a bit now, we're going to get to know you all. My name's Bernard, this is Gillian, this is Steve, and this is Hooky. Yes, please...I'm dumb."
[the last part may have been directed to one of the crew]
State Of The Nation
BS: "This is not a ? cover. This a new song that is called 'Shame Of The Nation'". Given it a little face-lift!
Everything's Gone Green
BS: "Hello again."
Face Up follows.
PH: "Scroll to the end."
BS (at end): "Thanks very much. We're losing r..?....so we're not going off. Apparently not."
False start at the beginning of Confusion, with Barney playing a riff that I should recognize but I do not. The band quickly restarted the track.
Blue Monday
BS: "Stop smoking dope."
BS (at end): "Thank you very much, motherfuckers".
Sunrise
BS: "Stop snorting coke."
In Hooky's book, as recounted by "_brokebad" via YouTube, a fan tried invading the stage which led Hooky to push him off. This upset the audience who thought Hooky had actually kicked the fan in the head, and they began booing and throwing stuff at the band. Eventually the songs 'fell apart' and i guess barney got stressed out from this because when Hooky looked across the stage at the end of the set, Bernard had kicked her amp over, grabbed her effects pedals and guitar and thrown them out to the audience.
The question is, assuming the veracity of this account, when it would have occurred during the show because it's hard to tell from the surviving recording any evidence of this.
Stephen ends it with a single cymbal crash.
The very end has The Cure's "The Walk" over the PA.
AUD #2 (ijwthstd recording, complete show)LA Times writer Richard Cromelin was not too thrilled with them.
