NO: 27 JAN 1985 - Tiffany’s - Leeds, England
The Perfect Kiss, Love Vigilantes, Sunrise, Sooner Than You Think, Lonesome Tonight, This Time Of Night, Subculture, 586, Temptation, Face Up, Blue Monday, Age Of Consent
I have three sources for this one. One from Simon Park, and is a fairly good sounding tape. The other is in my archives, and is pretty hissy, but fairly listenable. They originate from different sources. The third is from Snotters and is the best of the lot.
A bit of flutter on the source tape for the first part of The Perfect Kiss. Some loud talking at the 4:10 mark, somebody asking about the location of one of their mates or something like that. (Park tape)
Love Vigilantes
BS: "Thanks very much. This next song is in a slightly different vein to that one...that's...different. Eddie, can I have more guitar though the side fill?"
Punters shout out and start chanting "Here we go".
The bit before the chopping guitar solo is a bit odd, it's lower in pitch than normal.
Sunrise and Sooner Than You Think follow. Lots of chattering through the first part of the latter on SP version.
Lonesome Tonight follows on their heels.
lyric: "You reached out in my sleep, and instead of me you [dr... fuck]?"
This Time Of Night
A bit more chanting. Somebody remarks, "Drum machine." Tiny bit of rumble at the 4:00 mark.
Subculture
BS: "We're gonna brighten it up a little bit now because you all came to enjoy yourselves, not listen to us."
On the Park tape, a male fan asks his female counterpart what he said, and she explains it to him (and us). Simon Park didn't know these people, and remarked that they didn't appear to be New Order fans. He eventually moved away from them in order to get away from their talking.
BS: "It's Gillian's birthday today". Folks start to sing "Happy Birthday". Bernard than adds, "It's Steve's birthday tomorrow." Which it is not, Oct 28th being the correct date for Mr. Morris. However, Jan 27th is actually Gillian's birthday, the Blackburn and Finsbury announcements were akin to a practical joke.
Bernard says something sounding like "So I met you" at about the 1:30 mark. He ad-libs after the "one of these you'll go back to home" (can't quite make it out).
After they play the tune.
BS: "Thank you very much."
Then this peach of a Barney put down in response to the audience calling out. The Snotters version has an edit at this point, missing the first word below:
BS: "'Temptation' (in a very sneering tone), listen, we're fucking sick of playing that bleedin' song." Another or maybe the same punter calls for "Procession" instead (heard on Park tape).
The Order then proceed to play 5-8-6.
BS: "We play what we fucking want."
Bernard makes the following comment at shortly before the two minute mark.
BS: "I was going to do a little bit of dancing on this one but, er, I'll save it for Temptation."
An edit takes out the first part of Temptation on the Park version, which has a false, or more accurately, a late start due to the sequencers not loading in time.
The A/B split takes out a bit more, so the initial part of the first stanza is left out. The archive tape and Snotters' version has it complete...you can hear Hooky or somebody playing scales.
Tony Meehan writes:
"The sequencer, much to BS's annoyance starts playing Temptation. He promptly walks over to the sequencer and fiddles with it for a couple of minutes. Each time it starts Temptation. BS gives in and proudly announces that the next song is a new one, Temptation."
BS: "Sorry about this...this has been parked(?)...not too late(?)... got it right. ...anything like that." (hard to make out due to the muddy recording.)
Punter #1: "What do you think so far?" Punter #2: "Pretty good."
Punter #1: "Right, yeah."
Girl Punter: "took me about four...four numbers to get into it..."
(can't make out rest of what she's saying)
Bernard mutters "[numble], We love you", after singing, "Heaven, a gateway, a hope.", "a feeling inside, it's no fuck" and other barely-audible comments.
BS: (at end) "See, we've played that one so much that we can play it."
Face Up
Very good version, nice drum and Hooky outro.
Archives version has sound problems for the first part of the song. SP and Snotters versions are fine.
Cut in tape for encore (on Snotters version no pre-encore PA music). Can't identify song.
BS: "Gillian's made us come up because you all have sung 'Happy Birthday' to her. Unfortunately, she doesn't appears to be coming up. [Hooky strums bass] Oh, she's there, she's there."
Gillian plays a couple of notes on her keys.
Blue Monday
BS: "You've all got to wait for this next song cuz our roadie over there, Andy, doesn't know how to load the sequencer." Ouch. And he's now their manager."
Interesting synth tones in this version.
BS: "Thank you, thank you, thank you. We love you, I love that. we're not doing just one encore, but two. Because it's Gillian's birthday, as I said before."
Then the group launch into Age Of Consent and the volume surges up (on both audience tapes).
Punter on Park tape calls out for "more" as that tape finishes.
BS: "Thank you".
Versions
VID #1 Filmed by Solitude (Peter P.) in conjunction with SP, who reported there are audio/video sync issues. SOL says there was an attempt to overdub the cam audio with superior AUD audio recording (AUD #9). Part of a set of 3 VHS-C masters that was auctioned on eBay but not sold.
AUD #1 RJ - Sony WM-D6c / Aiwa CM30 - TBD: compare this to see if it matches up with other unlineaged sources. My BV copy is the same source as this. Flip point between 586/Temptation, misses a bit of the improv at the start.
AUD #2 Snotters - no lineage info. Most of Snotters' transfers around this time tended to be mono, but this is a very good recording. No distinctive comments from audience members before "Here We Go" chants before "Love Vigilantes", unlike other versions. A/B flip between Subculture and 5-8-6. This is likely the source of the Fractured/Image version shared on YouTube.
AUD #3 SP - Technics recorder with built-in mics. Cold open right at the start of TPK. Somebody talks right after Bernard starts singing..."thinking about a friend of mine" as the mics shift about.
Right before the start of "Love Vigilantes" after Bernard calls Eddie to provide more guitar thru the side fill, somebody near the taper calls out for "Ceremony" through chants of "Here We Go" and then "In A Lonely Place" as his female companion giggles. Same person can be heard talking after Sunrise. After "This Time Of Night", she also helps tell everyone what Bernard just said about brightening things up a little bit, right before they sing "Happy Birthday" to Gillian, which was a feature for all these late January shows, but this day is her given birthdate. The part about Steve's b-day being tomorrow is a joke, as he was born in late October. Has a cut between 5-8-6 and the start of Temptation, and about 45s in Temptation at A/B flip.
AUD #4 - (from 'Clownmaster'). Seeded to DIME 2018-06-15. Taper says it's his 4th separate version. Fairly wide stereo, lots of chatter during intro of TPK...male and female voices, after side fill comment at the start of "Love Vigilantes", a shout out for "Age Of Consent" a brief cough, and loud "Here We Go Chants". Very start of Temptation cut.
AUD #5 - DR, Sony WM-D6 + ECM-939 mics. Recorder/mic info from DAP tradelist reads "Sony ECM-929LT", which gives ANA1, b+ 78m. Not sure if these both describe the same source, but timing-wise AUD #5 runs about 77:45 on both versions I have, so quite likely it's one and the same. Has 20s of Killing Joke "Follow The Leader" at start. Flip point between Subculture/586, where the taper says 'one-two'. Mic bump / lead issues during Face Up intro at about 5-6s point.
AUD #6 - Lazlo, Saisho P60 with borrowed Philips mics. Female giggling and comment about "ya, Bernard..." right before the band takes the stage and start up on TPK. Distinctive because somebody shouts "ya" at the 57s point. Nothing distinctive except loud whistling and chatter between side fill and Here We Go chants, but different than other version shared. Somebody calls out for "Procession" right before band start 5-8-6.
AUD #7 - MP3-only. Whistling between tracks more prevalent on this version, including some at the end of Sunrise. This recording is in the realm of the SP's and clownmaster-sourced recordings in that it's a "down in the throng" variant. On this version, somebody is talking through Bernard's "thanks very much" at the end of TPK, and loads of whistling. Flip point between 5-8-6 and Temptation.
AUD #8 - unknown source. This one is FLAC, but sounds a bit metallic and runs fast. Very distinctive "Bloody hell, not you!" and nah-nah type singing before the start of TPK. You can hear a call for "Age Of Consent" after Bernard calls out Eddie to provide guitar through the side fill, but unlike AUD #4, no cough, and "here we go" chants are more distant. Another one that does flip point between Subculture and 5-8-6. Distinctive woodpecker-type laugh during the start of 5-8-6 when Bernard says he's sick of playing Temptation, and more laughing/singing through that.
AUD #9 - SOL/SP - Synced audio doesn't match any of the other versions shared, amazingly enough, but sounds closest to the RJ AUD #1 verstion. There are stretches that didn't record due to a faulty mic battery which SOL got from a stranger.
In addition, or in conjunction (as they may be the sources forunidentifed versions above), we have the following...
