NO: 20 AUG 1984 Winter Gardens - Margate, England

Setlist Blue Monday, Thieves Like Us, Dreams Never End, Your Silent Face, Senses, Chosen Time, The Village, 586, Temptation

Soundcheck (25 minutes):   Sooner Than You Think, Leave Me Alone, The Village, Sooner Than You Think

Supported by Life.

Winston Winand: "New Order didn't do an encore although the crowd were screaming. The lights came on and the roadies were packing away the gear. Someone must have said something out of line because one roadie jumps down from the stage chasing a guy in the audience arms and fists all over the place quickly followed by another roadie to make sure of it. Barney was blonde that night and the computers were playing for about five minutes before the band came on. The stage was an explosion of sound, with no New Order!"  Mucho thanks to Winston Winand!

The first two and last two tracks appear on a "soundboard" tape of middling quality, later proven to be audience-sourced.

(thehappyone - newly shared for 40th anniversary of show)

There's also at least one audience version of this gig, supplied by Dave Mings, which you can hear above.

Blue Monday

The intro is a complete mess. Breaks down after about 25 seconds.

BS: "Erm, I'd like to dedicate this next song to, shut up, Steve (who stops drumming), Elvis Presley, who I based my entire vocal style on and who I think I look a lot like."

They start up again.

On the audience version, there's some chatter at about 0:30, and somebody having a conversation on the left channel from 1:00 to about 1:30.

At 5:40:

BS: "Andy, guitar, fluoresent light all over there, please."

Thieves Like Us

Quite an impressive Hooky "yeah, yeah, yeah" grunt at 0:38.

Dreams Never End follows.

Hard edit into  Your Silent Face .

A bit of audience chatter at 2:00.

Barney mutters something after "A path we cannot take".

At the end, somebody states, "Incredibly faithful to the original."

Senses

Punter says "bass ...boot up."

Includes the extra verse that started in 1983 or so.

Interesting squeaking sounds at about 3:15-3:25.

BS: "Thanks very much."

A bit of a false start to Chosen Time.

At 1:23, Barney sneaks in "slow down", probably addressed to Steve, who's drumming a mile a minute.

The Village follows.

5-8-6

Nothing really to note.

Temptation

Abrupt edit into this on audience tape.

Some frog sounds during the intro, at about 0:30.

Ending faded out on soundboard version. Audience version fades out right when BS says "Thank you very much". A cry of "David" (or something similar) is the last thing heard.

Versions

AUD #1 - Degraded-sounding soundboard. Only first two and last two tracks, with the final Temptation faded out. Now believed to be a dramatically re-EQ'ed audience recording, but that may have been it is often paired with Hull's, which certainly is an audience recording.  This has just been shared for the 40th anniversary of the show.

AUD #2 - unknown taper/equipment - shared by davemings 12/4/2004. Features edit between 5-8-6 and Temptation, with the the intro to the latter cut out.  This is the version up on YT.

AUD #3 - Different version than the TJ recording, lacks the left channel audience chatter at the start of BM.  Surfaced in 2007.

Unknown for sure which of these three were recorded by TJ/gang, perhaps AUD #1 as that most readily circulates.  It's also said Jon Marsh of the Beloved recorded, and was responsible for sourcing the soundcheck
